One in a Million: Lystra's Story

One in a Million: Lystra's Story

Last year, Lemontree served over 1 million people–enough to fill every seat in MetLife Stadium more than 12 times. Every one of those people has their own story–here's one of them:

"I was so nervous, my heart was beating so fast. I felt ashamed and embarrassed."

When Lystra first visited a food pantry, she worried about being judged. "Sometimes people are afraid to ask for help because of how people make them feel," she says. But just five minutes from her house, she found the opposite. Within moments, friendly staff members were handing her bags of food.

They made me feel so relaxed and welcome, I couldn't believe it was real.

In Baltimore, where she's raised four sons, Lystra's roots run deep. "I love this neighborhood—it's so important to have neighbors who genuinely care and moments where you're able to connect."

When her youngest son was killed at 15, Lystra faced an impossible choice. "I relied on the joy of the Lord. I had to choose whether to crumble and die along with my son or understand that I had a purpose to fulfill for my other children and myself." She chose purpose. "I just want to serve. I try to extend the grace that I hope someone would extend to me."

For Lystra, service goes hand in hand with food—picking up groceries for homebound neighbors, helping others in line use Lemontree, befriending pantry staff. She embodies what we know to be true: food creates community.

It's not just about breaking bread. People are drawn in because they need food, but then you meet people who don't look down on you but extend a hand to help you. If I have a loaf of bread and you have none, I'm giving you half of mine.

Months after her first wary visit, Lystra has grown to love the pantry. "When I'm outside in line and a staff member comes out, they hug me, we make jokes, we laugh. It's so intimate—I know everyone by name, I’ve met their children. They take good care of me." Sometimes I leave with a cardboard box to share with my neighbors. Even if it’s just desserts, it means that someone cares about you.

Lemontree is a big deal, especially with my son and his kids at home with me. Lemontree has helped more people on this block than just me. Just by getting connected, I'm able to share with so many more people.
